We were recently blessed to have our man the internationally known street artist OD visit Balmores HQ, and while he was here he made sure to throw up an insane piece on the one and only Tupac Shakur right outside our building. Having graced walls around the world with his art, including the famous 5 Pointz in NYC and Melbourne’s own Hosier Lane, NZ-born OD has been killing it armed with nothing but some spray cans and a love for the culture.

Salute to OD and the dope 2Pac piece outside Balmores HQ; Pac now watches over us. Shoutout to Jason Manukau and ThaBrotherz for helping to make it happen.

Read More »]]> Over the past few weeks, Balmores has been involved in the ARTillery Human Rights Arts Festival, run by Amnesty International.
Balmores provided support in the ways that we could for the following events as part of ARTillery:
› Poetry Slam themed around Freedom of Expression hosted at the Dancing Dog Cafe
› Hip Hop For Amnesty showcase representing fundamentals of hip hop culture and the importance of human rights at First Floor 393
› Risk – 48 hour Performance Generator performance pieces based on Amnesty International Campaign Individuals at Risk at the Collingwood Underground Arts Park

Over the course of 10 days, we were blessed to witness the skills of great local poets, emcees, producers and performing artists amongst other talents focusing their energies for a collective aim. Human rights are something that we in western society often overlook and too often take for granted. But we have the power to be the voices of the voiceless.

Giving back has always been a great motivation for Balmores and our small part is a but a minute attempt to give back to our global community.
The real props here however, go to the people who just make events like ARTillery happen.

Speaking as an ex-student, he explained his background as a graphic designer, what led to the formation of Balmores and the idea that anything was truly possible. Answering many eager questions and speaking about our triumphs and lessons, influences and aspirations, we explained to the students that despite all of the dreams that we were turning into reality with Balmores, all of it began with just a single sketch and a great idea.

Read More »]]> On the night of May 28, 2009, a popular local nightclub in Melbourne opened its doors for another night of business.
The club was bumping; with a wild dance-floor, filled to capacity and drinks spilling everywhere, a huge crowd had gathered to celebrate the official launch party of a newcomer to the scene. That newcomer was Balmores Clothing.

Oh how much we’ve grown.
2 years ago, armed with nothing but some clean tees and a headstrong desire to take on the streetwear scene, Balmores threw itself into the fray, eager to make our mark.

Fast forward to now and we look back at our beginnings with a smile. Overcoming obstacles, making many friends and mistakes along the way, we’ve grown into the Balmores you see now. But one thing we know has stayed constant is our philosophy; we started Balmores wanting to make great, authentic streetwear, and we are still making great, authentic streetwear.

Crowds gathered as some of Melbourne’s finest skaters hit the half pipe at full speed, eager to show off their skills — and grab a piece of the $7000 prize money. The party could be heard blocks away and with great food and free refreshments an arms length away, it wasn’t hard to settle into the vibe of the party.

A great day in all, and a positive way to show love for the local community!

Read More »]]> We recently had the opportunity to touch base with Alonso Majikal on his latest project with Pabs.
MP2 – “Dirty Beats For Lonely Rappers” is an Album created for both beat fans but in particular, hip hop fans.
The album embraces style, drum arrangements, sampling techniques, recording techniques and even the different feel of swing that can be achieved in beat making.

Balmores: What inspires you in your sound?
Alonso Majikal: That’s a tricky question man, if I had to say what inspires my sound is the memory of something that was at one time a classic, you know what I mean. The times of when I think of the classic music, I think the 90s.
It wasn’t until we were rapping that we noticed we weren’t getting the sounds we wanted, because we kept having to borrow instrumentals. We then decided to make our own instrumentals, and that’s where the beats started; that’s where the beats came in.

B: What do you want people to take out from the music you put out there?
AM: I’m hoping that when people listen to it that they don’t categorise it. I hope they don’t come with an idea that is preconceived by something they have seen.
I just want them to listen to it, and when they hear the beat, hear the drums – hear the sounds that are coming out. Don’t wait for somebody to rap, don’t wait for something, don’t expect to hear what you were expecting to hear. I’m saying when you listen to it, just put the s**t on and vibe out. Enjoy the music for what it is because that’s what it’s all about.

B: Any advice for any aspiring producers?
AM: I have advice for anybody who just loves some type of expression, keep expressing man – keep expressing. Don’t bottle that s**t up. If writing music makes you feel good, then do it because it makes you feel good.
